Birthday Banter

It was my birthday yesterday and really the first time I wasn’t super excited for it. I wasn’t depressed or anything, just not stoked like normal. Is it because I’m now 31 and the next memorable number is 40? I’m not fighting aging, it’s just happening much faster than I expected. There is still so much I still want to accomplish and experience and I’m getting anxious that I won’t have time to do it all. Sure I’m making strides, marriage, kids, house…but there is still the traveling, sailing boating, owning my own vintage store…you know…the stuff for dreamers. With my big ambitions seeming so far away, I am learning to find satisfaction in the small victories. For example, furnishing the house how I want it and finally throwing out the hand-me-downs. Going to a concert with my daughter. Making a sale on eBay and/or etsy. Of course I’m proud of my wonderful husband and my two great kids, but a girl…well this girl anyways…has got to have day-to-day, month to month goals to keep her sane. And making a 2 month old doctors appointment or cleaning the bathrooms doesn’t count.

I think it’s when I stop caring what others will think and start listening to myself that I can finally relax. I’ve begun keeping a constant flow of fresh-cut flowers throughout the house. I’m trying new recipes and painting the kitchen cabinets. I’m realizing that wild impulsive teenager who never backed down from what she wanted is still in there and even as a married mom, she is desperately wanting to shine through.

Pinterest…Floral…90′s

I was scrolling the Pinterest boards I follow and saw some fabulous floral flats. It really got me thinking about floral and how I miss the 90′s.  Most of all, watching Daria and expanding my Doc Martin’s collection. For years the 90′s were thought to be the worst fashion years, however, with their recent comeback, some are changing their tune. They were bold, fun and colorful. Just like the music. HA! Which I also enjoyed and still do.  Now I wish I would have saved some of my baby doll dresses and denim button-ups. You know, the ones I swore were a mistake and never would wear again. I should have known better.  I’ve rummaged through some of my favorite 90′s moments. Fun times.

The Sea – Fashion Collection

My first girls night outing since the baby was to one of my favorite places in town, the Phoenix Art Museum. The curator of the Fashion Gallery was giving a talk on the current collection The Sea. I have always loved the water and to combined the two in a collection sounded divine. We were taken through the centuries by the sea and how history and acceptability have transformed the fashions. I loved seeing the designers inspirations. The collection ranged from the mid 1800′s to current day. I stole a few clicks of my favorites. The red and white vintage swim suite in contrast with Chanel’s latest collection including the terry cloth jacket. It was also a treat to view one of Chanel’s dresses in which I just saw in the pages of the latest Vogue. Pardon the poor picture quality. I was using my phone in an attempt to be discrete.

The collection as a whole was both beautiful and educational. Next up on the exhibition list for the fall is the 1920′s. You better believe I won’t miss that one either!

Vintage Dresses!

While new fashion is exciting, I love to reminisce of the earlier years and reinvent the past. As an indulgence, my sister and I have opened up a new vintage dress shop Alli Vintage on etsy. While we currently have an inventory of primarily dresses, I hope to add shoes, purses and more in order to create some fantastic full ensembles. Here are some of my current favorites.

Vintage Dress - Coffee Shop Junkie

Vintage Dress - Hawaiian Hautie

Vintage Dress - You Can Call Me Marilyn

Fashion Police – Can’t look away

Last night I found myself flipping the channels and landing on Joan Rivers. She was wearing a large burnt orange fur-trimmed jacket harping on a random celebrity for their fashion folly. She was co-hosting the show Fashion Police along side, Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osborne and George Kotsiopoulos. While the show was at times crude and mildly obnoxious, I couldn’t get myself to change the channel.  It was like watching the aftermath of a car accident.  You can’t take your eyes off of its mayham and destruction. I watched, focused as Joan cut down the majority of the looks displayed and then the co-hosts laughing acting like they are embarrassed. Yeah right. Halfway through I made the decision to lay back and finish the just recently extended hour-long show and enjoy. I found myself wondering how I could get a job on a TV show bashing other people’s fashions while looking rather questionable myself. I think it now takes a place as one of my top dream jobs. Right next to personal shopper.

Pick My New Purse

I am in GREAT need of a new purse. The one I have currently have is a bit embarrassing. It’s the one I got for free as a gift for first subscribing to Vogue. Sure, I have other purses, but they are all very large. When I was prego, I got sick of lugging the huge handbags everywhere. Needing to buy all things baby, I couldn’t justify spending the money on a new purse.  Now that I have opened my eyes and see the purse I’ve been using the past few months is REALLY bad, I don’t know how I ever thought it was OK. There are so many wonderful choices this season for handbags. I want something really fun for summer and I honestly don’t know where to start. I have a few of my favorites, but I really can’t choose. In an effort to make a solid decision, I’m reaching out to you to help me. Which one do you like the best? Please let me know and I’ll post which one I finally chose based on the comments. Thank you in advance!!
